all my hardware plays mp4 fine...
try www.xbmc.org if you need a media player that can play anything (as far as i can tell).
if you can't connect your current computer to you tv then get a www.raspberrypi.org for us$25,
and that can run xbmc. (it has composite out and hdmi).

i'm all for x264, it reduces file size while increasing quality, what's not to like?!

just to confirm, audio quality appears to be fine (and video too). if it's not, then check your
software/hardware (and the file integrity).

why should i have to pay anything to play a file that is just as big (and sometimes even larger) and
no better quality than the xvids we've been getting all along? that makes absolutely no sense. i
know that $25 doesn't seem like a lot to you, but to some of us that several weeks worth of savings
after necessities such as rent, food, etc. and is a totally unnecessary expense when there is
absolutely nothing wrong with the xvids except that it takes us a lot longer to find them now that
eztv has decided to not carry them even though they are still out there.

those are the two complaints. having to spend funds on new hardware and waste time searching for
files that used to be right here and easy to find for no good reason other than some peoples
inflated egos.

just fyi for all the naysayers. i normally watch shows on my pc in vlc. they all still play fine
for me. but i was worried about the tv and bd player working for others in the house. the 3 year
old samsung tv (40c630) that only does dlna (no internet) plays the mp4 file fine. also the newer
samsung bd player (bd-d5250c) with full internet apps also plays it fine. files are being served by
a seagate goflex home nas. i haven't tried on my mother's phillips dvd player that only plays avi
and not mkv.

between this "war" between avi and mp4 going on and now tpb has switched to magnet links only...it's
too much change all at once for me. i was gonna go there for my backup avis that aren't posted here,
but now i'm not so sure..

i'm ocd about my shows, so switching in mid-season like this irks me. so much so that i may not even
make the switch this summer like i probably would have, had they just waited a little longer on this.

if encoded correctly, x264 will have a higher quality then xvid, and will have a smaller filesize.
if you have a pc to download it on, it should be able to play them fine as well.
if my > decade old pcs/etc can play it, anything can. (you just need the right software).
x264 files will be smaller for the same quality, .: you can save money on your internet quota.
oh and one very important thing:
eztv are not the ones who decided to go x264!
it is "the scene" that has decided.
eztv is just a distribution channel.

pssst same here, there's no reason you whiny little aholes can't buy a hdmi cable to go from you pc/mac to your tv's or
better yet just pick up an wdtv box and run a network cable to it
