rant begins:
seriously though, people empty their bladders and bowels everyday; they die everyday. as a species,
we do lots of stuff regularly that normal people would not be comfortable putting on public display.
if someone offered a thousand dollars to any patient on a cancer ward who'd sell them video rights
to enable them to create entertainment from their dying moments, that'd be dark too. it's dark
because it's commodifying what is generally accepted to be very private, personal, and/or intimate.

people can argue that our norms should change regarding what constitutes intimacy and what
respectable people should keep private. that's fine. in fact, if someone makes amateur porn because
they're a natural exhibitionist, then imho there's nothing dark about it. since they don't share
those norms, they're not surrendering something deeply personal for money, or for celebrity, or for
acceptance, or because they're pressured, etc.

while i could be wrong, and there are some exceptions, i don't think that giving pleasure to
exhibitionists is the basis for making much porn - even so-called "amateur porn." after all, most
people do still think of sex as private and intimate. (of course, for the latter, the association
seems to be less strong with each succeeding generation, which some people think is a sign of decay,
and others think is a sign that we're becoming more sophisticated.) so, for better or worse, it's
still something with a dark side to it today.
