first show i've ever watched that has been picked back up shortly after its cancellation. congratulations to everyone on the show, and a big well done to those who petitioned. to quote futtbucker, the starter of this topic: "why does this warrant a news item? let's face it, an actual petition would do nothing to sway tv execs away from what they believe to be the right choice. tv execs won't even know an online petition exists let alone make them change their minds." well, i agreed with him. but when i read about the nuts and how successful that was, i knew cbs would respond in some way. this makes me a very happy person! |

the online petitions did bugger all, this is entirely because of the nuts and phone calls. but of course this'll lead people to believe that online petitions can work, leading to even more of them being created and un-necessarily getting people's hopes up. i remember reading one about a year ago (years after the show in question got cancelled) where a guy believed that if he got 1000 names on his petition the wb would bring back "sabrina the teenage witch". roswell was saved by mailing in tobasco, farscape was saved by the huge offline movement to save the show, family guy was saved because of dvd sales, jericho is saved because of nuts and phone calls, none of these were saved because of x number of names on some random internet petition site. just wish there was something that summed up "veronica mars" that could be sent into the network, though aintitcool.com's idea of mars bars is pretty cool. |

deluge of peanuts brings back 'jericho' tv show an online protest involving 20 tons of peanuts delivered to cbs entertainment in new york and california has succeeded in bringing back the television show jericho, which the network canceled last month. in an online announcement wednesday afternoon, cbs entertainment president nina tassler called the online outcry a "probably unprecedented display of passion in support of a prime time television series" and said cbs has ordered seven more episodes of the show for mid-season. "we will count on you to rally around the show, to recruit new viewers with the same grassroots energy, intensity and volume you have displayed in recent weeks," tassler wrote. (previously aired episodes are available on itunes and tv.com, which is owned by news.com publisher cnet networks.) jericho is set in a post-apocalyptic kansas town that survived, through an accident of geography, atomic explosions that lay waste to major cities including washington, san francisco, boston and denver. the show centers on the perils that the green family and other jericho townspeople face in a world without electricity or a functioning central government. food is scarce, life is harsh and organized gangs and government thugs (it's difficult to tell which is which) roam the midwest. the show aired opposite the highly popular american idol and ranked 48th overall in terms of prime-time viewers. and the nuts? that's a reference to the final episode, in which laconic hero jake green repeats the epithet made famous a half-century ago when general anthony mcauliffe rejected a request ("nuts!") to surrender to the germans. fans irked about the series' cancellation signed up with nutsonline and solicited contributions. by the end of the day wednesday, $54,820 worth of orders were shipped to cbs totaling more than 40,000 pounds--something like 8 million peanuts. other online protests have involved star trek enterprise, joss whedon's angel (a buffy the vampire slayer spinoff), and the critically acclaimed but short-lived arrested development. from cnet news.com |

wow. i'm admittedly surprised. i was one of those that did not think the execs would be swayed at all. be that as it may, it should've been axed and i believe it still will get axed. just a matter of time. but who knows, i've been proven wrong already so my opinion on this matter is not very credible. |

here's a link to the cnn article and actual associated press release: h**p://www.cnn.com/2007/showbiz/tv/06/07/jericho.cancellation.ap/index.html ![]() i'd like to point out that the actual press release stated that it will be mid-season, while less reliable news sources say they have no time period set for it yet. on a related note, the official jericho message board confirms that it was the peanuts, letters, and phone-calls that were responsible, while the online petition had nothing to do with the decision. |

woohoo! it's back! :d putting aside the fact that the online petition did nothing (yes, that's right, it did nothing), it's great to see that the show will be back (if only on a probationary term). the actual efforts of die-hard fans (ie. sending nuts and snail mail letters) are to be commended and it's a little sad that their fire is being stolen (if only marginally) by people who are too stupid to realize why the show is back. even worse is that people don't seem to realize that while the show will get 7 or 8 episodes, it by no means indicates that the show is back for good. note the comments by execs indicating that all they're doing is giving it a second chance, meaning that should their numbers still fail to reach their expected targets, the show is still going to get cancelled, which basically means they realize that the show has potential, but only in so far as ratings will allow (ie. the show basically has about as much chance as a new show for staying power). basically, they're getting you to do their work for them with regards to advertising and word of mouth and all that (which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but is still manipulation). what's good about all this (besides getting more episodes and possibly some closure), is that the first few return episodes will likely have a higher than average rating due to the publicity this has all created (which makes one wonder about whether the entire thing was orchestrated as a publicity stunt of some kind). the problem is, whether the ratings can hold at that level through the next run, remains to be seen. if it can't, it's simply going to get cancelled again. the moral of the story boys and girls, is try to restrain your patting yourselves on the back. you won't know if your efforts did anything besides get a few more episodes and some closure (which is in itself a great accomplishment) until at least another season arises after what cbs has announced for the 7 or 8 more episodes coming up. at the same time, i did say that the best we could hope for is a made for tv movie, for which i'm happy to eat crow ![]() series cancelled again after this short respite of 7-8 episodes. the show just doesn't have enough continuity to go much farther beyond where the story arcs are now, at least not without turning into something else entirely (which wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing) or turning into something completely retarded. only time will tell that i'm right ![]() fb |

of course this doesn't mean that the show will get picked up again, after the 7-8 episodes shown. but aside from that fact, it's stille a huge step that the fan-base of a tv-show have made tv-execs take back their decision of cancellation. |
