i would say the reason there are no exploits out there is because, as we have already been told, the mac is made for beginners. so the ratio of computer literate people that would be capable of writing an exploit for a mac would be practically zero compared to pc. i spose thats a good thing, but it is a false sense of security for mac users. because of this, mac users are lax on security and therefore a danger to everyone else on the internet. a vulnerablity is a vulnerablity - you cant say os x vulnerabilities are more secure than windows simply because noone using the damn thing has the nous to write an exploit for it. however the existance of "proof of concept" worms and trojans, such as osx/leap-a & osx.exploit.launchd, demonstrate that mac vulnerabilities can and will be exploited - it's only a matter of time. |

you don't think microsoft targets beginners with its fisher-price xp skin (and vista equivalents, no doubt) and oversimplified and obfuscated method of running applications and everything else through the miraculous 'start menu'? at least one version of windows (i think it was me) actually tried to hide your files from you when you opened your boot disk's root directory. and sure, you're right! it's only a matter of time! i guess six years isn't enough for a single genuine threat. complete insulation from all current threats is hardly what i'd call a 'false sense of security'. |

i'd just like to get some clarification on something cause i'll be the first to admit that i know shit about mac - the last time i used one was in high school about a year before mac lost the australian educational institute contract it had held for many years previously ... but i digress ... it was posted earlier that the mac os x is an all emcompassing os that includes products for anti virus and spyware detection. am i right in assuming mac os x is distributed with safari browser & an im? does it also come with a media player (maybe quicktime or sum itunes crap) and image editing? am i right that microsoft got in shit wif netscape for providing an all- encompassing product that required no third party software - such as a browser - because it did not allow for third party competition? so why is mac getting away wif it? |

i found the gamma correction thing in macs second to none or even third or forth to none, for that matter. it must give mac users a great kick out of life knowing that their gui is a different shade of gama than 90% of the rest of computer world. may explain why every mac, itunes crapola site looks so blinding white to adjust for the dull gama correction config in macs... htp://www.cgsd.com/papers/gamma.web.html ![]() exerpt: if the gif is ultimately going to reside on the web, where it will be viewed by people with mac's and pc's, you are out of luck if you want everyone to view it correctly. |

santabj, your responses (most at least) are honestly laught-out-loud funny they're so stupid. you didn't tackle all of mine, and i don't want to give you the satisfaction of spending 15-20 minutes on a reply, so i'm just going to respond to a couple of things as quickly and concisely as possible. first, perspective. apparently you have that. and apparently even though you don't like it, you've used every version since system 6. odd, to say the least. i guess it's not perspective you need, it's just not to be an asshole. in your very first post in this thread you told the guy to get a real computer. what a witty quip that was. you're truly old beyond your wisdom. |

(justcommenting says) "apple won the mp3 player war fair and square. if you're not familiar with the insane number of lawsuits and associated crap brought against microsoft over the years for their anticompetitive practices, i sincerely suggest you read up." wtf? what mp3 player war? are you talking about dietunes and diepod? they both blow harder than a h bomb imo. i never used that bloat and advise people against screwing their systems installing dietunes. i even hate the new qt implementation of the mp4 h.264 format as it alway looks worse than avi x.264 and runs like crap on any system. i wish apple would go fall off a tree somewhere and stay out of the real media world as they just seem to stuff up every standard... somebody has to be different. as for surfing without firewalls i bet your router modem has one and if it doesnt your gear is crapola. my kids xp machine sat there unpatched for two years and didnt get a single thing wrong with it behind a hardware firewall, so i can safely say that my kids 2 year unpatched xp systems is up to your standards, at least. i still use windows 98 on the net sometimes as i need very low latency for a particular vintage software synthesiser, and still dont have problems with viruses and worms, so under justcommentings security analysis even win98 lives up to justcommenting seemless os standards too.. where the problems start is with key gens and exe cracks with bad payloads, which by the way are way more accesible and common with doze boxes. sure you take a risks when looking at by passing copyright protection but the alternative is lets have little fun or no fun on a mac. those dodgy sites you speak of, it is more what you download and execute than the site itself and if you use a mac i am afraid there isnt much out there that could possibly work on a mac, in essence you are visiting those sites for sweet fa. so your point is? |

if mac manages to increase it's market share then the hackers mite get interested. at the moment it is more attractive for them to direct their efforts at the largest user base. why write malware to target 5% of the market? it's a numbers game. anyway, a reduced threat environment does not equate to safer systems. apparently it takes apple about three times as long as ms to patch vulnerabilities once they have become public (an average of 66 days compared to 21 days) - leaving the systems open to exploitation in the mean time ... again dangerous considering the general mac user's lax attitude towards security. it is also my understanding that multiple pcs on a network can be automatically patched simulataneously, while mac's can only be updated one at a time. apple were initially so flippant about security that the month of apple bugs project forced the company to deal with reality. i hear their adverts were quite smug too ... almost challenging the computer world to find holes in their os - be careful what you wish for. noone here is claiming pcs are not riddled with security flaws, but quit touting about how secure your mac is when there's more holes in it than an apple in a worm farm. |

hey, you were being a dick, i thought it was only fitting that i was too with the big bang thing. you were dissing the op from the get-go. and now you're really clutching at straws. obviously there was no mp3 player 'war' because apple exploited a brand new market, my point was they used no underhanded or illegal tactics to do it. (that's the key difference.) also, aac is part of the mpeg-4 specification, it's not 'owned', etc. by apple, they just chose to use it because mp3 was dated. and neither itunes or ipod are 'aac players at their core' since neither originally supported aac at all for several years. and lmfao, you call it a proprietary format and implicitly compare it to mp3. both audio layers are specified by the same group of people, mpeg, yet aac requires much less in the way of licensing. and even though your hands are full, your next move will be to clutch at straws and say 'but lame doesn't need to be licenced' even though that's completely irrelevant. am i right or am i right? and soul electronique, you seem to be no less than partially trolling ('diepod'? seriously? and you have a kid? ![]() dull, so i'm not even going to bother responding to what you're saying. ven, theoretical holes don't mean shit when in six years there have been no actual real, practical threats. |

numaris, not to troll but i'm finding your post more than a little incoherent. soul electronique, what does the kid have to do with anything? well see what it shared its parentheses with? your immaturity and trolling? yeah, that. i was just surprised someone old enough to be a parent would honestly be that much of a dick, it's the sort of thing you expect from a ~14 year old. speaking of which, i can only assume that's the age you knocked your girlfriend up, because i can't imagine you being an adult. and now i'm going to just completely ignore you. troll away all you want. |
