hostile much?

i think its to be expected that queries about the primary mirror on this site
not working correctly are going to crop up here. also, define not having your
browser set up right. if by that you mean allowing popups and active x
components then i don't want my browser 'set up right'.

also, you have no idea and cannot speculate that their fund situation is
meagre. i would imagine with the level of traffic they're getting they'd be
doing pretty well for themselves with all the advertising they have. i've
seen many websites up and running more efficiently with far less advertising
than bt-chat. (just look at mininova if you want a market comparison)

but all this is besides the point. while the admins from eztv are in no way
responsible for any problems bt-chat has, it is arguable that because this
site is directing a significant amount of traffic to bt-chat that a
representative from bt-chat should answer queries and concerns from these
forums without getting aggrevated about it. it's a service after all, and
with all the advertising, a service they're getting paid to operate.

i was only aggravated because it's been happening a lot lately, which usually is
no fault of our own, and when eztv gets annoyed, i get annoyed. also i had just
woken up at the time, was in a bad mood, and on top of that my first reply
didn't go through.

as for the fund situation, we currently have two servers one of which is a dual
xeon, and has a pretty expensive bill attached since it's not like we have an
exact choice of providers for hosting a torrent site ;p yes, currently we are
making more than we are dishing out, this is due to other plans in the works, to
eventually run bt-chat ad free permanently. in the past, when we could afford it
we have always taken the ads off, and when we redid our site, it was ad free for
many months. we have been testing out different ad providers for the past 2
months, and trying to find an acceptable situation for us to achieve what we
wish to achieve, and have even allowed users to disable the popup on their
account with us.

mininova isn't much of a market comparision at all. they run lots more servers,
with lots more traffic, and probably have far better banner ad deals then we do.
their form of advertising is no different from us, except we have one popup
which pays far more than ad banners (our ad banners don't cover enough at all to
pay the bills even). if we could get better income without the use of a popup
then we would. popups are everywhere on the internet i don't see how one popup
on our site causes everyone to go ape shit, that we have technically had for a
long time, but only now noticeable to eztv members since we changed our direct
linking policy, who have been spoiled by it in the past.

problems people have been having with whatever ads are on our site related to
browser problems, are very minimal and thus is very hard to fix for. the only
thing we can recommend is trying different browsers, or just don't use our site.
we don't recommend the use of ie at all on our site really, and from the replies
on here, firefox works fine for all, as it does for me and everyone else i know.
if anyone does have any idea for these problems related directly to the way our
site is coded in any way, feel free to let us know either on irc (#bt-chat @
efnet), on our forums on the site or email (btchat[at]gmail).

i hope this clears some things up for you.
adolphras Posted at 05/03/2008, 23:01
i am having the same problem with bt chat
fridgist Posted at 06/03/2008, 02:26
nbtx, thanks for your response, this has certainly cleared many things up, and
has confirmed much of what i thought. i did realise that mininova wasn't the
best comparison when i wrote it, was just hoping no one would poke too big a
hole in it on that note though, mininova has much higher traffic levels
but is also a more inviting site to visit. yes, yes, i know they can charge
more for their click-through banners and such so they can physically afford to
have less advertising - that doesn't mean that you guys have to go overboard,
even if you do intend to go ad free permenantly.

you don't need to run active x to have popups, i actually have no problem with
a simple popup but activex really makes me want to leave a site, i'm sure a
lot of people feel this way and it must be affecting your traffic levels.
also, have you noticed a reduction in traffic recently since people started
experiencing this lastest problem? i fear if you check there must be a
difference, you'd still be getting the hits because people can still connect
to the site even though it crashes instantly, but not as many pages viewed.

at the end of the day, it is not the responsibility of the end user to select
a browser specifically for a website, the site should be compatible with all
browsers. so yes, it may be browser problems, but it's your browser
problems. the average joe internet bloke that tries to visit your site and
gets that error instantly gives up and goes to the competition, theres no
complaining in the forum which they can't access, and why would they bother
logging in to your irc channel? they probably don't even know what irc is.

so your regulars keep coming back, and maybe you get a few new users that
don't experience the problem, and don't care about active x. but what about
the other 75% of the internet population that use ie6/ie7? thats who you want
on your site, the person that's going to click on the pretty adverts.

ok, i've written enough i think, it's not having a go at anyone, it's like a
rant/suggestion type thing and if you don't read it all and just this last
line i'll sum it up for you.

if you make your site more inviting and compatible with all
browsers, you increase your traffic levels, and can therefore start charging
more for simpler adverts.
fridgist Posted at 06/03/2008, 02:32
ok, and i should have checked that it was still causing errors before i'd
written that whole thing, you've certainly fixed it for me anyway. i can now
view pages again.
fridgist Posted at 06/03/2008, 02:56
numaris, i don't need to email bt-chat, theres a representative here who is
reading this thread. it is still reasonable to discuss eztv's primary mirror
on this site.

you can be pleasant sometimes, but most of the time you come across as an
arrogant eztv lapdog. i don't mean to offend, it's just you don't need to
police the forums in case someone says something that you feel conflicts with
eztv - they do have admins for that

discussion is the whole point of forums. whether you like the content or not,
telling people to shut up is...off topic?
fridgist Posted at 06/03/2008, 05:00
someone agreed with me? woohoo!

and i thought only the voices in my head had any approval
NBtX Posted at 07/03/2008, 15:17
fridgist thanks for your reply. is there still activex problems? i removed
something else that we were testing which might have caused it, if not i'll see
what else we can do. i also understand what you are saying about the browser
problems, but it is something that is really hard for us to fix if it is in the
ad coding itself. unless people have suggestions for better places to host ads,
we are stuck with where we are. we are trying out different popup providers
though to see which gives the best result.

i myself visit bt-chat without any popup blockers, and allow all ads, and have
no problems via ie or firefox. so it's hard for us to fix a problem if we're all
highly computer competent people and have no problems ;p maybe i should try the
site on my brothers computer or something

i will talk it over with the rest of the gang though about figuring out a
solution somehow, if you have any ideas, feel free to email us and we can
discuss them. thanks!
fridgist Posted at 08/03/2008, 01:26
i'm not sure what you've done now... at first it appears theres no active x
running anymore which is great, but once i sit on a page for 20 seconds or so
a script tries to run which gets blocked. it must be something to do with one
of your popups or banners, i don't see the popups i just see that i have one
blocked popup as soon as i enter the site - there isn't a blocked popup that
coincides with the active x warning.

definately a step in the right direction though!
irvine.d Posted at 08/03/2008, 16:14
i used the function to disable the ads but it doesn't work.

admin : abusive remark removed. keep it civilized or you are out.

NBtX Posted at 09/03/2008, 11:30
30 virus eh? lol i'm sorry but that is absolutely absurd. we do not serve virii
on our site, and neither do our ad providers (intentionally). it is very highly
unlikely you would be attacked by a virus. i'm sorry but you either
misinterpreted what you were seeing, or you already have spyware/virus on your
computer from things before you came to our site.

as for some popups bleeding through when disabling them, we're looking into why
this is happening.

fridgist Posted at 10/03/2008, 18:14
some people are so rude...

if you want something to be fixed bbear you should try at least telling us
what os/software you are using to browse the internet. it's very doubtful you
got any viruses without actually downloading and running a file of some kind.
you might find that if your computer security is inadequate i.e. crap
firewall/browser then you may already have malware and spyware installed
throughout your system.

that popup requesting you to do a scan is a common advertising ploy (although
i've never been dumb enough to click on one myself) if you did follow the link
in the popup then bt-chat is not liable for your own stupidity. (they are
just the vessel for the ads, click on them at your own risk). much like the
whole of the internet in general, you have to use common sense to navigate it
or else risk endangering the security of your computer and your personal
details.

there may be popups, but you don't have to click on them..
